INDIA IS WORLD’S SECOND-LARGEST ARMS IMPORTER


The report “Trends in international arms transfers, 2018” in its latest release, by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) pointed that India is world’s second-largest arms importer.

About

Defence Deal
• Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest importer which accounted for 12% of the total imports during the period 2014-2018.
• Indian imports decreased by 24% between 2009-13 and 2014-18.
• The reasons for this include delays in deliveries of arms produced under license from foreign suppliers, such as combat aircraft ordered from Russia in 2001 and submarines ordered from France in 2008.

• Import partners:
 Russia accounted for 58% of arms imports during 2014– 18, compared with 76% during 2009-13.
 In the coming years, the import from Russia is going to rise as India signed deals including:.
  1. S-400 air defence systems.
  2. AK-203 assault rifles.
  3. A second nuclear attack submarine on lease.
  4. Deals for Kamov-226T utility helicopters, Mi-17 helicopters and short-range air defence systems etc.
• Arms exports to India during 2014-18 increased from Israel, U.S. and France.

Some insights of the report

• Pakistan stood at the 11th position, accounting for 2.7% of all global imports. Its biggest source was China with 70% of arms imported, followed by the U.S. at 8.9% and Russia at 6%.
• Global Volume has increased: the volume of the international transfer of major arms during 2014-18 was 7.8% higher than in 2009-13 and 23% higher than during 2004-2008.
• The five largest exporters during 2014-18 were the United States, Russia, France, Germany and China, which together accounted for 75% of the total volume of arms exports during 2014-18.
• The five largest importers: Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Australia and Algeria.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)

• It is an international institute based in Stockholm, Sweden, dedicated to research into conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament.
• It was established in 1966. It provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public.
• SIPRI was ranked among the top three non-US world-wide think tanks in 2014 by the University of Pennsylvania.
• In 2016 it ranked SIPRI in the top twenty-eight among think tanks globally.
SIPRI’s work on national reports includes:
• Conducting research projects examining the different national approaches to reporting.
• Maintaining an archive of all publicly accessible national reports on arms exports.
• Describing developments in national reporting on arms exports in the SIPRI Yearbook.
